7 Wonders Of Canada – Chosen By Canadians

In 2007, all Canadians were able to choose the most wonderful places in their countries. In this post, you’ll find out which 7 wonders of Canada they picked.

The competition was held by the CBC television network and all Canadians were able to cast their vote online. The winner got an astounding 177,305 votes.

This competition was similar to a competition launched by the New7Wonders organization which ended the same year. In this event, the new 7 wonders of the world were chosen by voters worldwide in an attempt to replace the 7 wonders of the ancient world.

The winners of this Canadian voting contest were announced on the National News in Canada on June 7, 2007.

7. The Cabot Trail – 44,073 Votes

The Cabot Trail is a highway and road running through an amazing landscape. It’s located in the Nova Scotia province in eastern Canada. It runs through the Victoria and Inverness counties on Cape Breton Island.

The Cabot Trail has a total length of 185 miles (298 kilometers) and passes through the Cape Breton Highlands, a mountainous plateau that offers amazing scenery. It’s named after John Cabot, an Italian explorer who discovered the coast of Canada in the year 1497.

6. The Canadian Rockies – 55,630 Votes

The Canadian Rockies is the Canadian part of the Rocky Mountains in Northern America. They are located in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.

They are the eastern part of the Canadian Cordillera, a part of the huge North American Cordillera, a mountain range that runs all through the western side of the Americas.

The highest peaks of the Canadian Rockies are Mount Robson, with a height of 12,972 feet (3,954 meters), and Mount Columbia, with a height of 12,293 feet (3,747 meters).

5. The Polar Lights – 61,417 Votes

The Northern Lights also referred to as the Aurora, are amazing light displays in the sky. These are created by solar winds that cause disturbances in the magnetosphere, a region of space surrounding the earth.

These light displays can only be found in high-latitude regions around the Arctic and the Antarctic referred to as the “Auroral Zone.” This means that they can be admired in the utmost northern part of Canada.

4. Nahanni National Park Reserve – 64,920 Votes

The Nahanni National Park Reserve is a protected area in the Dehcho Region of the Northwest Territories in the northwest of Canada. It’s located about 311 miles (500 kilometers) west of the capital and the only city in the region, Yellowknife.

The park is centered around 4 major canyons which reach about 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) deep and are called the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Canyon.

Through these canyons runs the South Nahanni River, a spectacular whitewater river that forms the Virginia Falls.

3. The Bay of Fundy – 67,670 Votes

The Bay of Fundy is a bay located between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It also touches a small part of the US State of Maine. It’s famous for its extremely high tidal range.

The tides have two highs and two lows each day and the range can vary about 43 feet (13 meters). On average, the tidal range anywhere else in the world is just 3 feet 3 inches (1 meter).

Because of this high tidal range, the tides that flow through the bay are very powerful and have created amazing natural wonders such as sea caves.

2. The Niagara Falls – 81,818 Votes

The Niagara Falls are a group of 3 waterfalls located on the border of the US state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. They are located on the Niagara River and drain Lake Erie into Lake Ontario.

The largest of the 3 waterfalls is known as the “Horseshoe Falls” and is located right on the border of the two countries, while the other two waterfalls, the “American Falls” and the “Bridal Veil Falls” are located within the United States.

The total height of the waterfalls is 167 feet (51 meters) and combined they have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in Northern America with a flow rate of 85,000 cubic feet/second (2,400 cubic meters per second).

1. The Sleeping Giant – 177,305 Votes

The Sleeping Giant is a formation of hills that resemble a giant taking a nap when looked at from the west to the north-northwest section of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

The Sleeping Giant formation is known to have extremely cliffs that reach 820 feet (250 meters) in height and the formation is part of the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

It’s clearly THE most remarkable spot in all of Canada according to thousands of Canadians because the Sleeping Giant won the 7 Wonders of Canada competition with 95,487 votes more than the immensely popular Niagara Falls!
